TL;DR

Accountants verify the numbers a company produced (audit), recompute the same transactions in the language of tax law (tax), and take apart the books before a deal closes (advisory). Automation took over reconciliations and coding entries. Investigating what the tool flagged, and signing the opinion, did not move.

What an Accountant Does

What an accountant sells is not arithmetic. It is verification, and it splits into three tracks. Audit gathers evidence on whether the financial statements a company produced comply with the framework, and issues an opinion. Tax recomputes the same transactions under tax law, files them, and argues them with the revenue authority. Advisory attaches to transactions: due diligence on a target’s books, valuation, restructuring. One license, but three years in, the shape of the day is a different job in each.

The other fork is firm versus in-house. In public accounting you look at many companies from the outside, and independence rules keep you at arm’s length from the clients you audit. Busy season is real: where December year-ends dominate, the first quarter is one long audit. In-house is the mirror image. You produce one company’s numbers from the inside, close monthly and quarterly, and sit on the receiving end of the audit. Because the training runs from checking toward building, the firm usually comes first and in-house later.

The exam depends on the country. In the United States, CPA Evolution has run since 2024: three core sections (AUD, FAR, REG) plus one discipline of your choosing (BAR, ISC, or TCP), with licensure handled state by state. Korea’s exam is administered by the Financial Supervisory Service and requires designated accounting and tax credits before you can even apply. Japan’s is run by the CPAAOB under the Financial Services Agency, with a four-subject short-answer stage twice a year and a five-subject essay stage once. Mainland China splits it into a six-subject professional stage and a comprehensive stage; Taiwan runs it through the Ministry of Examination on a subject-by-subject pass system.

Why This Career Right Now

What automation took first is easy to name. Coding entries, bank and intercompany reconciliations, pulling terms out of contracts, populating filing forms. Where sampling used to be, full-population scans now sit. The nights junior staff spent tying out a reconciliation genuinely got shorter.

What did not shrink is the center of the job. In June 2024 the PCAOB amended AS 1105 and AS 2301 to spell out the boundary. Even when a tool analyzes the entire population, the auditor still has to evaluate whether that information is reliable, and still has to investigate whether the items the tool identified indicate misstatements or control deficiencies. Those amendments apply to audits of fiscal years beginning on or after December 15, 2025. In the same period the PCAOB’s staff outreach on generative AI, published July 2024, found firm use focused primarily on administrative and research activities. Judging whether a fair value or an allowance estimate is reasonable, deciding which way management’s explanation leans, and putting a name on the opinion did not move. Automation multiplied the candidates; the number of items a human has to judge went up, not down.

The supply side is the other half of the story. The AICPA’s 2025 Trends report counted 55,152 accounting graduates in 2023-24, down 6.6% from the prior year, while enrollment in accounting programs grew about 12% year over year for two consecutive semesters in 2024-25. Three in four firms that hired in 2024 said they planned to hire the same number or more in 2025. In 2025 the AICPA and NASBA rewrote the Uniform Accountancy Act to add a third route to licensure: an accounting bachelor’s degree, two years of experience, and the exam. Each jurisdiction still has to enact it, so check your own state before you plan around it.

Who Fits This Work

  • People who cannot let it go when the totals foot but the story does not
  • People curious about why a standard was written that way; the guidance is meant to be read, not memorized
  • People who have run several deadline-bound jobs at once and survived it
  • People who can deliver a conclusion the other side will not like, with the evidence in hand
  • People who do not find it tedious to write up a judgment that a stranger will read years later

How to actually prepare for this career

A great fit if you…

  • You open the source document because you want to know how the transaction behind the number actually happened
  • You like working inside rules, and you also want to know why the rule was written that way
  • You can run several deadline-bound jobs at once without falling apart
  • You can state a conclusion the other side will not like, as long as you have the evidence

Be ready for…

  • !Busy season is structural: where December year-ends dominate, the first quarter is one long audit
  • !The exam is long: credit prerequisites through the final stage take years, and licensure adds an experience requirement
  • !Your name is on it: the opinion goes out under a signature, and a failed audit returns as discipline and litigation
  • !The hands-on rung got shorter: automation took the reconciliations, so judgment training has to be designed on purpose

Step-by-step prep roadmap

In middle / high school

  • Train reading before arithmetic; this work spends more time on reading definitions and conditions precisely
  • Take the books for a club or student council and carry it through to a closing report; handling other people's money is nothing like a personal budget
  • Open one public company's annual report and trace where the revenue and the operating profit actually come from

In college / early on

  • Check your jurisdiction's credit prerequisites in your first year and build them into your schedule; in many places you cannot sit the exam without them
  • Plan the exam in multi-year blocks, and practice writing answers by hand for the essay stage
  • Filter real transaction data yourself in Excel and SQL; reviewing what a tool flagged is now the basic move of the job

Landing your first role

  • Start in a firm's audit practice and decide within two to three years whether you attach to audit, tax, or advisory
  • What reads in an interview is not the license but a time you caught a wrong number; have that story ready from coursework or an internship
  • If in-house is the goal, look at close and internal-control teams first; the grammar on the receiving end of an audit is different

Competencies to build

What separates people in this job beyond credentials, and how to start now

Sensing something is off even when the numbers foot

Totals can foot and entries can balance while the story still fails. Revenue climbs but days sales outstanding stretches; inventory turns slow down with no stated reason. Build it now by putting three years of one listed company's statements side by side, picking a single account, and explaining to yourself why it moved that way.

Holding an adjustment in front of management

An adjustment is not finished when you find it; it is finished when it stands. The preparer pushes back, the finance lead says there is no time, and you hold the position with the evidence laid out, which is preparation more than personality. Practice now by writing up an unwelcome conclusion for a group project or a club's books and defending it in the room.

Writing a judgment someone else can review

Workpapers and memos get read years later by a reviewer, a regulator, sometimes a court. A file that records only the conclusion is not evidence; what makes a judgment survive is writing down what you looked at and what you ruled out. Train it by adding half a page to every report that says why you chose this method and what you discarded.

Filtering the list a machine handed you

A full-population scan reduces what you miss and multiplies what you have to check. Deciding which flags are real signals and which are artifacts of the rule is a human call, and so is the responsibility for it. Filter a transaction dataset yourself in a spreadsheet or SQL, then open every hit and measure your own false-positive rate.

The honest reality

Most of the day goes to assembling evidence, not to arithmetic. You tie what the company handed you back to source documents, ask the preparer why it was treated that way, and write the answer and your judgment into the file. Automation took the reconciliations and the full-population scans, so tying out by hand got shorter, while opening each flagged item, deciding what it means, and documenting that decision stayed the same or grew. After a few years in a firm the road forks toward corporate finance teams, internal audit, tax, and deal advisory, and from there what you are worth is less the license than knowing one industry's numbers cold.
